History of the Third Michigan

1861

July 21, 1861: General Tyler's division, 4th brigade (also known as Richardson's brigade after Israel B. Richardson of the Second Michigan who was placed in command of the Brigade shortly after the Michigan regiments arrived in Washington). Other Units: 1st Mass., 12th N.Y., 2nd Michigan, G. Batt. 1st U.S. Arty, M, 2nd U.S. Arty August 4, 1861: Richardson's brigade. Other Units: 12th N.Y., 2nd Michigan

October 15, 1861: Gen. Samuel Heintzelman's division, Richardson's brigade. Other Units: 2nd & 5th Michigan, 37th N.Y.

1862

April of 1862: Heintzelman's Third corps, Gen. Hamilton's division. Other Units: 2nd & 5th Michigan, 37th N.Y.

April 5-May 4, 1862: Heintzelman's Third corps, Hamilton's division, and Gen. Hiram Berry's Third brigade. Other Units: 2d, Michigan, 5th Michigan, 37th N.Y.

August 16-31, 1862: Heintzelman's Third corps, Gen. Phil Kearny/Gen. David Birney's First division, Col. Orlando Poe's Third brigade. Other Units: 2nd & 5th Michigan, 37th N.Y., 99th Penn. The Third Michigan has 260 men engaged at Groveton.

December 11-15, 1862: Gen. Stoneman's Third corps, Birney's First division, Berry's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 1st N.Y., 37th N.Y., 101st N.Y.

December 31, 1862: Stoneman's Third corps, Birney's First division, Berry's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 1st N.Y., 37th N.Y.

1863

January 31, 1863: Gen. Dan Sickles' Third corps, Birney's First division, Gen. Roberts' Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 1st N.Y., 37th N.Y.

May 1-6, 1863: Sickles' Third corps, Birney's First division, Col. Samuel Hayman's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 1st N.Y., 37th N.Y.

May 31, 1863: Birney's Third corps, Gen. Hobart Ward's First division, Col. Hayman's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 37th N.Y., 40th N.Y.

July 1-3, 1863: Gens. Sickles/Birney's Third corps, Gens. Birney/Ward's First division, Regis DeTrobriand's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 40th N.Y., 110th Penn.

July 31, 1863: Gen. French's Third corps, Birney's First division, DeTrobriand's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 40th N.Y., 110th Penn.

August 31, 1863: French's Third corps, Birney's First division, DeTrobriand's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 40th N.Y., 99th Penn., 110th Penn.

August 31, 1863: Gen. J. Dix's Department of the East, Gen. Ruger's brigade. Other Units: none.

October 10, 1863: French's Third corps, Birney's First division , DeTrobriand's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 40th N.Y., 110th Penn., 1st U.S. Sharpshooters.

November 20, 1863: French's Third corps, Birney's First division , DeTrobriand's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Mich., 40th N.Y., 68th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.

December 31, 1863: French's Third corps, Birney's First division, Col. Byron Pierce's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 68th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S. (vol. 29, pt. 2, p. 602). The Third mustered 20 officers and 275 present for duty and 7 officers and 165 absent, for an aggregate of 467 men in the unit.

1864

January 31, 1864: Birney's Third corps, Ward's First division, Col. West's Third brigade. Other Units: 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 40th N.Y., 68th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.

March 25, 1864: Gen. Winfield S. Hancock's Second corps (probably), Birney's Third division, Hays' Second brigade. Other Units: 4th & 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 57th, 63rd, 68th & 105th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.

April 30, 1864: Hancock's Second corps, Birney's Third division, Hays' Second brigade. Other Units: 4th Maine, 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 93rd N.Y., 57th, 63rd Penn. & 105th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.

May 5, 1864: Hancock's Second corps, Birney's Third division, Hays' Second brigade. Other Units: 4th & 17th Maine, 5th Michigan, 93rd N.Y., 57th, 63rd & 105th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.

May 31, 1864: Hancock's Second corps, Birney's Third division, Tanatt's Second brigade. Other Units: 4th & 17th Maine, 1st Mass. H.A., 5th Michigan, 93rd N.Y., 57th, 63rd & 105th Penn., 1st U.S.S.S.
